Breathing to Lose Weight - Is it Too Good to Be True?
The concept of the possibility of breathing to lose weight has begun to circulate among hopeful dieters. Of course, proper breathing is critical to overall good health. However, can breathing help you achieve weight loss results? Let’s take a look at this idea and explore whether or not it is feasible.
The fact of the matter is that many of us are not breathing correctly. For example, it is healthier to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
If you frequently "mouth breathe," you are not allowing your nose to naturally filter the air your breath. Just as most of us don't drink enough water, many of us are not breathing enough, breathing the right way or breathing deeply enough.
Now what about breathing to lose weight? Does that work? The quick answer is, "No way." You can't lose weight through breathing alone. If you are breathing heavily because you are working out and sweating off calories, well, that is a very different story!
Many people are claiming that you can lose weight strictly through breathing alone, and this just isn't true. Where is the science for such extraordinary claims? After all, do you really believe that you could lose weight just by breathing harder? You will benefit from getting more oxygen into your body, but that will not bring weight loss with it.
Our Modern Lifestyles Tend to Lack Activity
The phenomenon of this misconception underscores a more serious problem in that many of us are looking for shortcuts for losing weight. Our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were living and working on farms decades ago. As a result, our recent ancestors were engaging in a much higher level of activity.
Most of the population was concentrated on farms and were involved in working the fields. Even those who were city dwellers were far more physically active and had physically oriented pastimes.
Now if you fast forward to today, you will quickly realize that many of us work in front of computers, and work and play in front of television sets and computers. We can't eat the same diet and not expect to gain weight.
Taking Steps to Change Your Lifestyle
If you want to lose weight don't worry about breathing to lose weight or entering into a program to radically alter your breathing patterns. Instead, cut out the processed foods and fast food, and replace it with healthy whole food alternatives and exercise.
Opting for fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains will help your body more than any alternations you may make to your breathing. This will help you lose the weight and get in shape. Your body already knows how to breathe on its own, so don't worry about it. Instead, focus on changing your diet and habits for the better.
